Welcome to Project Grow

PROJECT GROW EVENTS FOR 2010

We host a number of events throughout the year, from large to small, and hope you will be able to join us. Whether you garden with us, think gardening is interesting, want to meet other green thumbs or just hope some of that green will rub off on you, we hope you will join us for a class, volunteer during a workday to check us out and meet other gardeners, and come on out to show your support of community gardening.

Project Grow's POTATO PLEDGE ROUNDUP!

This past spring, Project Grow invited all gardeners to particiate in the 2010 Potato Pledge. More than one hundred people took the Potato Pledge this spring and Project Grow volunteers handed out free seed potatoes to anyone who promised to donate a portion of the harvest to the hungry. Cosponsors, Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice and Food Gatherers brought in participants from the Faith Garden Program. Over 250 pounds of seed potatoes were handed out. If everyone had a perfect harvest those seed potatoes could generate a twenty to one return.  That's over a ton of potatoes we hope to donate this year!

Those potatoes are now maturing and Project Grow will be holding a Potato Pledge Roundup from 6-8pm on Saturday August 28th at the County Farm Park Pavilion.  In addition to turning in your potatoes, we will be holding a potluck (potato and non-potato dishes welcome).

We will also be asking people to take the Garlic Pledge. Several successful garlic growers will be on hand to answer question and talk about their favorite varieties. Jeff Kroepel will have a collection of favorites to show including the Asiatic Pyonyang and the massive Kilarney Red. For a small donation you can walk away with some heirloom garlic and instructions for fall planting. Russian Red, Bogatyr, German White and Music will be available. Any donations will be matched by the All At Once Foundation (go to http://allatonce.org/nonprofits/ ).

Tomato Tastings

It is easy to remember the date of the first Project Grow Tomato Tasting because it was September 11th, 2001.  A surprising number of people attended.  This means that the 2010 tastings will be our TENTH.  Like last year, this year we will actually be having two tomato tastings, so you can enjoy both early and late season tomatoes.  The first tasting will be held on Saturday August 21st from 10am to 12 noon at the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market.  Please come to the tasting and see what wonderful and varied tomatoes gardeners are growing this year!

The second tomato tasting will also be at the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market, but the second one will be held as part of Homegrown Festival.  The Homegrown Festival will be on September 11th and the tasting will be from 6pm-9pm.

2011 Plant Sale!

Project Grow's annual plant sale is held in front of the People's Food Co-op, on 216 N. 4th Avenue, in Ann Arbor, across from the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market.  Exact dates for 2011 are still to be determined but the sale is on one or two Saturdays in mid-May.

Unlike in previous years, Project Grow's sale is not part of Matthaei Botanical Gardens plant sale.  Matthaei's sale offers many wonderful plants, but if you want your purchases to benefit Project Grow, please wait and buy your heirloom tomatoes, peppers and basils at the Project Grow sale! For a complete listing of what was offered at the 2010 sale, please click here.
