LOCATION: The community garden at University Reformed Church is located to the rear or Ann St. side of the building. Access to the garden can be made from Huron St., or from Ann St. Parking is available across Ann St. next to the Jimmy Johns sandwich shop. The parking area is clearly noted for URC visitors.
SITE COORDINATORS : Chris Hart
Neviana Petkovaare
SOIL: The soil at URC is generally very sandy due to a playground that was formerly on the area. Compost has been added to amend the soil but frequent watering may be necessary.
WATER: The water at the URC garden is provided by the church for a fee. The water hook up to use is located off of the house owned by the church to the east of the garden. As with any hose watering system please turn off water when finished, turn off at the main connection not just the hose, overhead watering is the least desirable form of watering due to waste of water and more likely disease of plant material. Consider soaker hoses and mulching around plants to help retain moisture.
INDIVIDUAL PLOT MAINTENANCE: All gardeners are responsible for keeping weeds down in their plots and along the adjacent pathways. Various mulches may be used in your garden to inhibit weed growth, conserve water, and promote a hospitable micro-climate for plants and worms. Marsh hay is usually available in the spring, delivered to the garden from a local grower for a reasonable fee. If interested in learning more about marsh hay deliveries or for more information about mulching, contact your site coordinator or the office.
GARDEN MAINTENANCE:
Please keep the perimeters of the garden area free from organic refuse and other debris and stones. Project Grow does not provide refuse service. Please take home all paper, plastic, and other non bio-degradable material. Help make the gardens beautiful this summer by maintaining your own plot, planting flowers, keeping the gardens free from debris, etc. ANIMAL PESTS : None known at this time. Since this garden is located in the city and is fenced, gardeners here should have better luck than most with animal pests.
TOOLS: Tools are/can be stored in the shed which is to the south of the garden and located on the west side of the church.
ABANDONED PLOTS: Plots that have not been worked by May 31 or are overgrown with weeds taller than 1 1/2' at any point in the season will be considered abandoned and may be reassigned. Contact your site coordinator or the office if you are having problems getting started or if you have to abandon your plot.
FALL CLEAN UP: Your plot must be cleared no later than October 20th. Organic material may be chopped up and spread evenly across your plot. Take home all non-organic material, i.e., fences, stakes, plastic, paper, etc. Failure to clean up your plot according to the guidelines set forth in the Gardening Agreement may result in expulsion from the garden
The church has kindly offered this space for a community garden. Please treat the buildings and grounds with the respect accorded to all landowners where Project Grow community gardens are located.
